What Specifications To Look For When Purchasing A Travel Trailer To Carry A Dirt Bike And Carrier
Question:
Hi there. Looking for some help with regards to tongue weight on a single axle travel trailer. I’m looking to get a single axle travel trailer and plan to put a rack on the back to transport a 227 pound dirtbike. I want to ensure I know what I’m looking at so the trailer is still safe to tow. I would love your expert opinion to help guide me in the right direction

I would be happy to provide you the information to look for in a single axle travel trailer.
You will want to check with the manufacturer of each trailer you are looking at to find the maximum tongue weight the trailer can support. You will want the maximum tongue weight to be at least 300lbs to make sure you are not right on the maximum rating with the weight of the carrier and your dirt bike.
For a trailer hitch receiver for the rear of the trailer I recommend the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RV # 13703 which will work on Box Frame, I Beam Frame, Or C Channel Frame trailers that have a frame width between 22"-77". This receiver offers a maximum 350lb tongue weight rating and will need the Curt Stabilizing Strap # 18050 for any non-trailered loads like a dirt bike carrier. You can either bolt or weld the trailer hitch receiver on depending on your preference.
You will need to use an RV/Motorhome rated dirt bike carrier like the Ultra-Fab Dirt Bike Carrier for 2" Hitches # UF48-979033 which will support up to 500lbs and weighs in at 50lbs. An RV/Motorhome rating is essential due to the additional bouncing and moving on the back of your trailer that could cause a standard carrier to fail.
I included a video to all of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.
