Compatibility of Two Hullavator Pro Kayak Carriers On 2019 Jeep Cherokee With Raised Side Rails

Question:

Hi, I have two Hullavator Pro 898s coming this week and am trying to get a good read on the width of the cross bars needed. I was told, because they stick out over the end of the bar and that a 60 inch bar would work. Looking at the images I see what they are saying about the unit sitting out beyond the end of the crossbar. Do you have a sense on if a 60 inch bar could work with it setup at the outer edge of the bar like in the attached image? It appears that quite a bit of overhang beyond the end of the bar.

A Thule Hullavator Pro #TH898 is designed to require longer crossbars as they need to extend 4-8 inches on each side to give you clearance on the side of your vehicle. Each Hullavator will take up 36 inches but will as you stated extend past the crossbar requiting a maximum crossbar space of 28.5 inches. The 60 inch crossbar will fit both Hullavators and will also extend past the towers about 8 inches on each side of your specific vehicle. This is the best option for your application to allow both kayak racks as each can hold kayaks up to 36 inches wide.

The crossbars with the Hullavators loaded will "stick out" from the end of the bar as well, extending about 7 inches. That is about 15 inches on each side from your crossbar feet total. That is really the only way to fit two Hullavators on your vehicle and you will want to consider the local laws as some areas require not extending the load past the side view mirrors. If you don't want that large an overhang, you may consider just one Hullavator and then using an alternative rack like Rhino-Rack Nautic Roof Kayak Carrier w/ Tie-Downs - Side Loading - Clamp On # RR570. This combination would allow you to use 53 inch crossbars like # TH711420 with feet # TH710401. This won't require you to duck when entering and exiting your vehicle to the same extent. I'd personally go this route and use the single Hullavator to load and unload each kayak just moving the kayak from the Hullavator to the Nautic on the top of the roof. It is definitely more work, however it is a good alternative option that still gives you the lifting you are seeking.
