why do u need a hot wire coming from the battery?

The Curt T-Connector you referenced, part # C56333 receives the signals through its T-connection with the tail light assemblies of your Town and Country, but draws the actual voltage to power the trailer lamps directly from the battery.
This is done for a few reasons. First and foremost, if the aftermarket trailer wiring harness manufacturers determine that the OE vehicle wiring is incapable of handling the extra amperage of the trailer lights being drawn through it, they will specify that a modulite that draws the power directly from the battery be used.
This is a better alternative because the extra amps to power the trailer lighting are no longer going through the expensive electrical components of the vehicle. More vehicles are using thinner gauge wire and require a modulite regardless of how many lights are on the trailer simply to protect their wiring system.
Having the power drawn directly from the battery will also protect the vehicle wiring from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring.
