Recommended Trailer Brake Controller for 2016 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

Hi! Looking to purchase a brake controller for my 2016 4runner limited with AWD. It has the factory 7 pin. With that being said weve rented a small 20ft travel trailer for next weekend leaving on September 10th. Gross weight on the trailer is 2800lbs. I know I need a brake controller, however Im not sure I will ever use it again. I am reluctant to hard mount a controller. is there anyway I could just use a temporary install like two sided tape or velcro? Also its a relatively light singe axle trailer. How crazy do I need to go? Would a cheaper say $100 unit be just fine? Appreciate any help.

I'd be pretty wary of using velcro or tape to install a brake controller. If it should come loose and fall without you noticing, the controller would not work correctly and could put you in danger. I've heard of folks that used 2 sided tape to install the controller and had the controller come loose from the dash when they went to use the brake override switch, so I'd recommend installing it by mounting it to the dash as explained in the instructions. The holes needed to mount the controller are very small and would hardly be noticeable and you could still easily remove the controller later if you wish.

You'll need a brake controller, as well as the vehicle specific wiring harness.

For a brake controller, I'd recommend using a proportional model. A proportional controller will sense how quickly the tow vehicle's brakes are being applied and will then send the proper amount of power to the trailer brakes so the vehicle and trailer stop at the same rate. One of the more reasonably priced proportional controller we offer is the Curt TriFlex, part # C24VV. You'll also nee the # C51362 harness that plugs in to the tow package connector located above and to the left of the emergency brake pedal.
