Dexter EoH Brake Actuator is Coming on and Brakes are Smoking
Question:
I recently bought a 40 ft gooseneck trailer. When I hook up my seven way plug my brake actuator pump motor comes on and off without pressing the pedal. Going down the road my brakes heat up and start smoking. So I’m sure that it’s holding pressure on brake pads. I don’t know what’s making the pump come on and off

There are a couple of possible issues that are occurring with the Dexter DX Series Electric Over Hydraulic Brake Actuator for Disc Brakes # K71-651 or Drum Brakes # K71-650 which are causing your brakes to smoke.
First, you will want to ensure you are wired properly, as per the accompanying diagram. If it is, you can troubleshoot it with a 12 volt battery. According to Dexter, you will want to first detach all wires from the actuator, and once you do this, connect the white wire to the negative terminal of the battery and black wire to the positive terminal. The actuator should only click once and the motor should not start running. If it does, then the actuator is faulty and needs replacing.
Next, leave the white wire on the negative terminal and connect the black and blue wires to the positive terminal, which should get the motor running and the unit to pressurize; if this does not happen the actuator is faulty.
