Do I Need to Replace #84 Spindle With Rust On Surface and What Bearing Kit Do I Need

Question:

I have a band of rust on my #84 spindle in the region between the inner and outer bearing seats. The bearing seat regions are free of rust. Does the spindle or axle need to be replaced? This is a single axle utility trailer with a 3500 lb axle.

You should still be able to use your spindle without having to replace anything, especially because this is not in the seating areas for the bearings. Regardless, I recommend cleaning off the spindle with emery cloth to try to remove as much of the rust as possible. You'll want to take care to make sure that there is no pitting on the spindle that might damage the new bearings, which would be the only case that I recommend replacing the spindles.

If you do end up needing to replace your #84 spindle, the #84 Spindle for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 1-3/4" Diameter # TRU84FR will work for you if your axle is 1-3/4" diameter; if you've got a 2" diameter axle the #84 Spindle for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 2" Diameter # TRU24FR would be the correct replacement.

If you need replacement bearings and seals, the Bearing Kit for #84 Spindle, L44649/L68149 Bearings, 10-19 Double Lip Seal # BK2-100 kit is an all in one kit to replace everything in your hub.
