Frame or Cross-Member Mount Hitch Recommended for 2014 Ram 1500 w/ 3.6L V6 Engine
Question:
Do I need to buy the wider receiver that bolts on to the frame? Or will the smaller one that bolts on behind the bumper ok?

Whether you use a frame mounted hitch assembly like # 14374 or the receiver only type hitch that mounts to the factory crossmember like # 13333 will depend on the capacity you're looking for. A frame mounted hitch such as the Curt Class IV hitch # 14374 offers a 10000 lb towing/1000 lb tongue weight capacity which is greater than the capacity of your truck as it's equipped, so you'd be paying for extra capacity that you couldn't use.
The # 13333 hitch that would bolt to the cross member has a 6000 lb towing/600 lb tongue weight capacity, which is more in line with the capabilities of your V6 equipped truck. Either hitch will fit, but I'd recommend going with the cross member mounted hitch.
I've linked to installation videos for both hitches.
