Recommended Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier for 2019 Subaru Forester

Question:

I have a 2019 Forester and read Carla M. article https://www.etrailer.com/question-390452.html My primary purpose is for a 1 1/4inch bike rack that I have and would used it a lot - 2xs per week. Also I wanted to know if you have a 1 1/4inch to 2inch adapter if I needed one down the road. And if so how far does that adapter stick out from the 1 1/4inch hitch. I am thinking of getting a cargo rack and it seems they are only 2, unless you have a cargo rack that is 1 1/4inch Thx in advance for you help - Edward

Carla knows her stuff!

Honestly, there's not a big price differential between a Class II and a Class III hitch, so you might as well go with the Class III that feautres the more common 2 inch receiver that also has many more available accessories that will fit. I'd recommend the Curt Class III hitch, part # C13409. With the addition of a # HT02 reducer sleeve, you could then easily use your existing bike rack that fits a 1-1/4 inch receiver.

This is a much better way to go because using an adapter that goes the other way; changing a 1-1/4 hitch to a 2 inch opening robs you of half your weight capacity and adds a LOT of bounce. Which you don't want.

For a cargo carrier, there are absolutely tons of available options, but I really like the Curt # C18151. This carrier has a 20 x 59 platform that will allow you to carry all kinds of stuff you either can't or won't carry inside the vehicle. The rack can fold up against the rear of the vehicle when not in use, and has a 2 inch rise in the shank for added ground clearance.

If you want to stick with a 1-1/4 inch hitch, the Curt # C12198 is a good option. To avoid using an adapter, we do offer some 1-1/4 inch hitch compatible cargo carriers. I'd recommend the 20 x 48 Reese # 63155. This carrier won't fold, but it does have a 3 inch rise for that additional ground clearance.

I'll link you to some product demonstration and installation videos.
