How to Add Lift to Square Axle With U-Bolts

Question:

Hi there, I have recently bought a MacGregor 26x. Sailboat with a stock trailer. The boat overall weight is 2550# trailer about 530#. I replaced the springs with new 3500# springs and it still seems to ride with 1” of travel from frame to top of axle. Is this a normal amount of travel? Is it dangerous to raise it an inch or two or should Install 4000# springs. Trailer originally was rated at 3500#. Thanks

One inch of travel is not much but if there isn't contact being made you will be alright. Adding lift is not dangerous but since it is a square axle that uses U-bolts the best way to do that is going to be with taller hangers like the Front/Center/Rear Hanger for Double-Eye Springs - 4-1/4" Tall - 9/16" Bolt Hole # E4139.

You would need to have your current hangers removed and then welded on by a professional welder to accomplish this.
