How to Upgrade from Factory 4-Way on 2018 Ford F-150 To 7-Way Without Using an After-market Bracket

Question:

I have a 2018 F150 XLT non tow package. It does appear it came with a 4pin connector from the factory. I would like to upgrade to a combination 4pin and 7pin. Also, I wanted to see if it’s possible to mount the connector in the same place the factory puts this with a tow packageto the right of the license plate in the plastic. I see there is no hole in the plastic but when I look behind it appears there is a frame in the shape of that factory connector? I’m asking if I cut the plastic in that shape, could I install a connector there and make it look similar to the factory one? I’m trying to avoid having to install the bracket below the bumper if I can.

It is possible to do what you are trying to do but not with the Hopkins plug part # HM40975 because it is designed as a replacement part for a 7-way on your truck. It does not come with the harness that you need to activate towing functions with the square connectors. You can cut the hole with a dremel tool and use a Ford adapter 9U5Z 14489 MAA Plug and harness FL3Z 13A576 B Harness but you will still need to cut out that hole.

I recommend to use the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector part # C56413 and a no drill bracket part # C57202 and part # 18138. This bracket has a sturdy metal tie which allows you to wrap it around the hitch and use the bracket without drilling. Since the factory parts require trimming out the cut out with a dremel this may be an easier way for you. This wiring harness has the correct square plugs that you need for the install on the truck without factory towing package. I have attached an installation video for your reference.
