Recommended Bike Carrying Option for 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE

Question:

Hi- I have 2005 Toyota Sienna XLE with a spoiler. I was wondering if I am still able to use a trunk mounted carrier for 3-4 bikes. I worry that it puts stress on the spoiler and it might break. If I can, what is the best one I should invest in? Is it easy to put on? If not, how do I get something to be able to use a hitch bike rack? Thank you for your help.

I did some research online trying to get a good look at the spoiler on the liftgate of that vehicle. Here is the bottom line on minivan spoilers. If there is a gap between the spoiler and the vehicle that would allow the mounting straps to pass through and attach to the top of the door WITHOUT passing over the spoiler, a trunk mounted bike rack could be used.

However, since your spoiler does NOT have a gap and the straps or cables would have to pass over the top of the spoiler, I would urge you not to use a trunk mounted rack as the spoiler most likely will not have the strength to support the rack plus the bikes installed on it without being deformed or broken. A hitch mounted option would be the best choice for you.

I would recommend the Curt Class III Hitch, part # C13105. I have linked you to the installation instructions and an install video that you might find helpful.

We have many different 4 bike racks that would work well for you, but I would recommend the Swagman Trailhead, part # S63380. The Trailhead is an economically priced rack that includes essential features like anti-sway bike cradles that will securely hold your bikes to the rack and prevent them from swinging back and forth and striking each other. An anti-rattle hitch pin is included, but a locking hitch pin and cable lock, part # S64031 is recommended.

To carry womens bikes or bikes with sharply angled top tubes or step-through frames, using a frame adapter like part # 64005 is recommended. The adapter spans the distance between the seat post and the handle bar gooseneck, and provides a level attachment point to the bike rack so the bike has greater ground clearance and is not carried at an angle.
