How To Upgrade 5.70-8 Tires with 5 Lug Wheels to Higher Load Range

Question:

I am seeking two new tires to upgrade the tires I have. The set I have are 5.70-8 the wheels are 5 lug. Load range D 1078 pounds @98psi. I dont see a speed limit but I bet there is one. I would like to increase the trailer load capacity up to 2000 lbs per tire. I expect to upgrade the axle and springs to handle 3500 pounds. I want the smallest overall diameter tire that can support such a load. Please spec tires and plain wheels, plus axle

Helpful Expert Reply:

In order to upgrade a 5.70-8 tire to a higher load capacity I recommend using a 205/65-10, the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel part # AM3H480 which is rated for 1,650 lbs per tire. The overall diameter is 20.4" and overall width is 8.4". Therefore, the increase will be 2.4" diameter and 2.5" width. That said, you only need to account for 1/2" of these while measuring for clearance. The speed rating is 87 mph.
