Remote Mounted Engine Cooler w/ Remote Oil Filter Mount for 2002 Ram 2500 5.9L Gas Engine
Question:
have a 2002 dodge 2500 extend . cab 5.9 gas engine 4by4 it only burns oil when pulling my 5th wheel which is 5600 lb dry weight with about 2000 other lb. I was told the oil is getting hot and dissipating because of heat. the compression is good in all cylinders. would a oil cooler work and it will have to a remote filer to make work because of space between oil filter and frame. thank you for any help Gary.

If the excessive heat is indeed what's causing your 5.9 magnum to burn oil (good compression could back that up) then yes, an oil cooler would indeed help in your situation. There are two ways to tap into the oil system for a cooler, a sandwich adapter which fits in between the filter and the filter landing on the vehicle or a remote mount which has a spin-on adapter that installs at the filter landing and features a remote mount that allows you to install the filter elsewhere, such as the firewall or the inside fender.
Since the thickness of the sandwich adapter will put the oil filter too close to an obstruction to make it easy to get the filter off for maintenance in your case, a remote filter mount would be a good idea. I'd recommend the # D15850 Atomic-Cool Remote Cooler Assembly and the # D15748 Remote Filter Mount kit. One thing to keep in mind, the # D15850 remote mount cooler isn't meant to be installed directly in air flow, so you won't want to install that behind the grille.
