Recommendation For Lowering Trailer to Fit in Storage

Question:

I have a 5x10 enclosed trailer that is about 1-2 inches too tall to fit in the garage. It will be used weekly so looking for a permanent solution. It has 205/75D15 tires, do you think switching to 13 in wheels and tires bring it down enough to get it in without rubbing on top?

A shorter tire would lower the overall height of your trailer. However a 205/75r15 tire is just over 27" in height, so for a 13" wheel you would need a 185/80r13 tire that has a height of just under 25". Even with it at that height it's going to be right at the 2" mark. Another factor that you need to keep in mind is the capacity of the new tires, they must have a combined weight capacity that meets or exceeds the loaded weight of your trailer, and if your trailer has brakes the wheels have to fit over the brakes too.

Another option to gain clearance and lower you trailer is to replace the suspension hangers with shorter ones. This only works if your trailer has leaf spring suspension, if your trailer has torsion axles then the axle would need to be positioned differently. Both jobs I recommend having a qualified welder or trailer shop preform for you.

I linked our selection of hangers and a few articles with a ton of information about trailer tires for you to check out.
