Upgrade For 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tires On Jon Boat Trailer
Question:
I’ve got a trailer used for hauling a jon boat that currently has 5.70-8 4-on-4 tires:wheels that are desperately in need of replacement. Assuming I have acceptable clearance, can you confirm these would be an acceptable replacement and outline the advantages and disadvantages I can expect from moving up to these larger tires. Thank you.

The Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel part # AM30620 is an acceptable replacement for your existing 5.70-8 Trailer Tires on a 4 on 4 bolt pattern wheel like part # AM30120 as long as you have clearance. The general rule of thumb is 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. The Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30620 is about 2.5" larger in diameter than your existing tires so you do want to make sure you have the correct amount of clearance.
The only disadvantage that would come with upgrading to the Taskmaster 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Silver Mod Wheel is the clearance and the tire is actually 1.15" narrower than your existing tire so you will have less surface contact. Which isn't as big of a deal considering the weight capacity of the 4.80-12 # AM30620 is 990 lbs at 90 PSI with a 65 mph speed rating compared to the 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tires that we carry have a 910 lb capacity at 75 PSI. As long as you have the clearance the # AM30620 is a nice replacement and upgrade.
