There are 5 basic components you will need to flat tow a vehicle: base plates, tow bar, safety cables, lighting, and supplemental braking. You will also need to check the vehicle owners manual to determine if the vehicle can be flat towed and for the proper procedure for towing the vehicle.

Base plates provide a safe attachment point for the tow bar. There are several options for a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe. I recommend the popular Roadmaster XL # 1619-1. The most popular tow bar for these base plates is the Falcon 2, # RM-520. I have included a link to a video of this tow bar as well. For safety cables, use # RM-643.

To activate the tail lights on the vehicle, I recommend the etrailer tow bar wiring diode kit, # 154-792-118158. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle being flat towed. The easiest system to set up and use is the Even Brake # RM-9400. This is a proportional system that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the towing vehicle is braking. Proportional systems are the safest way to stop and they reduce wear and tear on both vehicles.

I have included a link to our series of FAQ articles on flat towing for you. Current pricing for all parts listed is available on the product pages.
