Question:
I have a 5x8 enclosed trailer with a single Lipert 3500 lb axle, running 15 inch wheels and weighing 1420 lbs empty. How do I know what brakes and all I need. I have a 4 point connector now, but need to connect current connections plus brakes through a 7 point plug. new installation of electric brakes on 5x8 single axle enclosed trailer

The first thing to check when adding electric brakes to the 5x8 enclosed trailer is to check for brake flanges on the spindle. I have attached a photo of what that looks like. If you do not have brake flanges you will need to have a professional weld on flanges like part # 4-35 which is designed for a 2-3/8" round axle.
Then you will need 10" brake assemblies for the 3500 lb axle, for that I recommend part # AKEBRK-35-SA. You will also need a hub-and-drum assembly but I would need to know the bearings in your hubs now that fit your spindle. You can pull the hub and look at the bearing numbers from the sides of the bearings or measure the spindle using the diagram I have attached. I can recommend a hub-and-drum assembly if I know the bearing information.
To install the brake assemblies you will need 10 gauge wire part # 10-1-1, butt connectors part # DW05745-5, zip ties part # DW05726-25, wire clips, electrical tape and ground screws to install the brake assemblies. You will also need a brake controller which our most popular brake controller is Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195. There may be a wiring harness that plugs into a port under the dash of your vehicle if you let me know your year make and model I can tell you which wiring you need for that and the 7-Way plug.
Finally you will need a breakaway kit, for that I recommend Hopkins Engager break away part # 20400 which has a built in battery charger. I have attached a helpful article about adding electric brakes to a trailer as well.
