Hoist to Remove B&W Companion from Truck Bed and is Sidewinder Compatible With Any Type of Adapter
Question:
I currently have a RAM 2500 Limited 4x4, 6’4” Box and purchased the Companion RVK3600 for use with my Grand Design 295RL 5th Wheel. I am wondering if the Viking Solutions Portable Loading System Item # 310-VLV001 would help me in the meantime to remove my existing RVK3600 from the 2500? However, I found the Rack Jack II Hoist Item # 310-VRJ001 which is supposed to handle 300#’s. It appears I could use that with the lifting device Item # BWRVXA3130 to install/remove the hitch. Lastly, I discovered the the 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter Item # CAB-C5G on your website. I have wondered for a while how I could eliminate the size and weight of the 5th wheel hitch and utilize gooseneck instead. So, here is what I am thinking for the future when I upgrade the truck to the F350 short bed. Use the Gooseneck adapter with the Sidewinder to give me the advantages of both. The trailer I eventually want to upgrade to would be the Grand Design 310GK 15,000# GVWR with a hitch weight of between 2,350 to 3,750 #’s depending on load. What do you think about that combination? Has anyone else done that? Thank you

Let's start with the hoist to remove the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3600 from your Ram 2500 and you can absolutely use the B&W 5th Wheel Lifting Device # BWRVXA3130 with the Viking Solutions Rack Jack II Hoist with Winch for 2" Hitches # 310-VRJ001 for this. People use this hoist for all types of things, from generators to hitches (like you see in the accompanying photo) and is a great option for much easier removal of the hitch from the bed than trying to manually lift it, even if you did so in pieces. You will only need the Pin and Clip # PC3 to secure the hoist in your Ram's 2" hitch. I've added links to video reviews for you to take a look at as well.
In regards to the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5G, that is actually not compatible with a Sidewinder like part # RP34FR. The reason for that is both a Sidewinder and the Convert-A-Ball adapter produce pivot points - at the turret and the gooseneck ball, respectively - which creates instability. There isn't a way to use a Sidewinder with any type of adapter; for example, it can only be used with a Companion like yours that sits in a puck system and would not work with a standard Companion that attaches to the Turnoverball gooseneck.
If you wanted to convert a fifth wheel trailer to be pulled with a gooseneck ball you certainly can, but would need to replace the fifth wheel king pin with a Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter. These will not provide additional turning clearance like a Sidewinder however, so you would need to utilize a long bed truck to ensure the trailer and your truck cab don't come into contact.
The Goose Box is a direct replacement for specific king pins:
- Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP85FR (20,000 lb capacity) is designed to replace Lippert 0719, 1621 and 1621HD, as well as Fabex PB-600 Series pin boxes.
- Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP94716-61301 has a 16,000 lb capacity and is designed to replace Lippert 0115, 1116 and 1716 pin boxes.
