Why do Some Trailer Suspension Kits Have Longer Equalizer Hangers

Why do some hanger kits have a longer equalizer hanger, it seems this would put the eq end of the springs lower than the outside hangers, causing the leaf springs to rebound at an angle causing chucking. Do you still use the 2-1/4inch shackles? Thanks

The reality is that not every manufacturer makes their suspension kits to the same standard sizes. Some use taller hangers with wider equalizers and some might use a taller equalizer with a shorter center hanger. It really just comes down to the preference of the manufacturer and what gives them the ride height and distance between tires that works the best for them. Also the fact that some trailer leaf springs happen to be longer or shorter plays into what is best solution as well.

Ideally the leaf springs are sitting as level as possible, there's enough clearance for the suspension to move without tire interference, and there's enough distance between the tires from front to back. The 2-1/4 inch lock shackle like the # TRSL225 is a very common size and most likely what you'd need. The hanger kit part # APT5 comes with shackles that are 2-5/8 inches long.

If you go with a kit like the part # APT5 the equalizer height, center hanger height, and shackle heights have already been figured out to allow the suspension to sit as level as possible.

Yes, the equalizers included in the Tandem-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit #AP233-H248 measure 2 inches tall (from eye hole to eye hole on center). I have attached a diagram to assist.
