Tongue Weight Too Low On Boat Trailer Towed By 2018 Ram 2500

Question:

So I have a 2018 Ram 2500 that is lifted 2.5inches and has 40inch tires AEV Prospector XL. I am pulling a 2014 Chaparral 307SSX with a triple axle boat trailer. I am using a weighSafe trailer hitch with 2 5/16 ball. I even put a level on the trailer to make sure that all was perfectly level. I am getting a LOT of pushing and pulling feeling. I have a since that my boat is too far back on the trailer because acording to my weighSafe hitch the touge weight is only 200lbs. I calculate the trailer and the boat to be a total gross weight of close to 11,500lbs. Obviously I will need to make adjustments to the boat on the trailer and to the trailer itself. Can you guide me in the direction of what I need to do to get this thing riding as smmoth as I know it should be!

The tongue weight of your trailer should be 10-15% of the loaded weight of the trailer. If your total gross weight of the trailer with the boat on it is 11,500 lbs then 200 lbs is a very low tongue weight. You can manipulate the tongue weight by attempting to load the front of the boat with cargo to weigh it down a bit. You want your tongue weight to be between 1,150 and 1,275 ideally. I think if you are able to increase your tongue weight you will not experience the pushing you are talking about. I recommend to use a tongue weight scale like part # e99044 for an accurate tongue weight rating scale.
