How to Determine Which Wire is Which on 7 Way RV Connector

My black wire is not in use on my connector, 7rv blade, and what is the red wire for?

In general terms, when you have a red wire on a 7 way connector it is typically going to be the left hand brake and turn signals. With that being said, it's probably more important to note where it is connected since this will determine what it is used for. I've attached the wiring diagrams for 7 way connectors to use as a reference as well as a general guideline below.

Typically, the wiring in each application isn't going to be completely universal, so going off the color of the wire isn't the best method to determine which wire is which. If you're installing a new connector, you'll want to test each wire using a circuit tester like the # PTW2992 in order to determine which wire is which.

We do have longer connectors, like the WesBarg 7-Way, RV-Style Connector #WG54006-046 which is 12 feet long. We also have connectors that aren't coiled like the Bargman 7-Pole, RV-Style Connector - Trailer End #50-67-103 which is 15 feet long.
