Will a 7 to 5-Way Adapter Work with an Electric Reverse Lockout On a Surge Brake Trailer Coupler
Question:
I have a boat trailer with surge brakes. My 2012 4runner has a 7 pin and 4 pin flat connector. If I use this product will it work the reverse brake lockout?

Expert Reply:
The center pole on a 7-Way trailer connector is the reverse light circuit. Provided that it is functional on your 2012 Toyota 4Runner, it will work with the electric reverse lockout on the coupler. You can use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to determine if the center pole works with the reverse lights.
First, apply the emergency brake and chock the wheels. Have someone start the vehicle and keep their foot on the brake and place the truck in reverse. Test the center pin on the 7-Way and make sure it shows power. If it does not, you will need to connect that circuit to one of the reverse light wires.
If it is working correctly, when you plug in the adapter, the output side should show a signal when the vehicle is in reverse to power the electric lockout.
