A Hitch Extender For a 2007 Lexus GX Towing a 2100# Shasta Astrodome Trailer.

Question:

We just purchased a 1961 Shasta Astrodome and are in love but failed to take into account the bunk overhang and are now trying to figure out the best tow vehicle. We have two rear facing toddlers and are on a budget. We considered a Honda Pilot but after a few reviews of others who have towed with them wed like something a little more powerful. We considered a 2006 Tundra but its just a bit too much for me. My preference is to get a used 2007 Lexus GX but then our dilemma is the bunk overhang of our travel trailer. My long winded question is, is there a hitch extender unit that could work for our situation? The travel trailer is 2100 pounds with a tongue weight of 300 pounds, according to the original specs. Please help! I want the GX but I also want to keep my family safe when towing.

First of all, congratulations because that is a great looking camper!

As long as the GTW and TW of your trailer does not exceed 4,500 lbs and 450 lbs respectively, the Titan Hitch Box Extension part # RP45292 will work well. This can extend as long as 34". Also, you will need to extended safety chains from your trailer to your tow vehicle.

Beyond the extender concern, you will need a hitch if your Lexus GX 470 doesn't have one factory included. The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75155 would be a great choice if that applies. It includes a bracket to mount your brake controller and harness. An installation video is included as well.

A wiring harness like the 4-Pole Flat, Hardwire Kit, and Circuit Tester # C59496 will also be needed.

Finally you will need a ball mount and tow ball to mount your trailer tongue to. Measuring for the rise or drop of your trailer is essential in determining what ball mount and tow ball to recommend. I have included a help article on how to do these measurements. Once you've done that and can provide that rise or drop, I'm happy to recommend a ball mount and tow ball for your situation.
