Do I Need To Replace My Reese Sidewinder When Switching From a Short Bed to a Long Bed Truck

Question:

I previously owned a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 mega cab with a Curt A16 fifth wheel hitch and a Reese sidewinder on my rv. I recently purchased a 2017 Ford F-350 lariat 4x4 crew cab with the 8’ bed. I have a bandw gooseneck that came with the truck and I am considering the b andw companion. I would like to change the kingpin since I know longer have the short-bed truck but is it safe for me to tow the rv with the companion a few miles to change the kingpin? I’m in a predicament.

Yes, you can use the Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel Pin Box with the B&W Companion Gooseneck-to-5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter part # BWRVK3500. However, you will need to remove the wedge from the pin box and lock-out the turret using two 3/4" grade 5 bolts (see photo). If you were to do the above then you could actually use the Reese Sidewinder with the B&W Companion long term as it would now be considered a conventional pin box so long as you locked out the turret.
