Converting a 4 Pole Connector on a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser to a 5 Pole Boat Trailer Connector
Question:
Hello, I am going to order this for my 2012 FJ Cruiser to enable me to pull my new boat. My boat trailer has a 5 pole connector and has trailer brakes. I am also going to install the Tekonsha P3 brake controller on the FJ Cruiser. What other parts do I need to convert this 4 pole connector to my 5 pole connector on my boat trailer so that my trailer brakes will work?

Usually when you have a boat trailer with a 5 pole connector the trailer has hydraulic surge brakes and not electric brakes and you would not use a brake controller. The additional blue wire is for a reverse lockout on your hydraulic surge brakes to deactivate them while the tow vehicle is in reverse.
If your boat trailer is the only trailer you plan on towing then you will want to install the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 pole trailer connector, part # 118405, and you will want to order the 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, part # 20036, the Mounting Bracket for 5 pole, part # tr20046, and the No-Drill Mount Bracket, part # 18140. Once the 4 pole wiring harness is installed on your 2012 FJ Cruiser, you simply just plug the 4 pole connector from the adapter to the 4 pole connector on the vehicle and plug the 5 pole connector on the adapter to the 5 pole connector from your trailer.
The 4 pole to 5 pole adapter comes with an additional blue wire that you will want to run this wire to your tail light and tap into the reverse light circuit using the quick-splice that is included in the kit. I have included a video that details the installation of the 4 pole to 5 pole adapter and installation instructions for the T-One Wiring Harness.
If you did want to install the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, part # 90195, for use with a trailer with electric brakes you will want use the Brake Controller 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. This kit allows for the additional brake, power and reverse light wires to run from the brake controller to the 7 way connector. I have included installation videos and articles detailing how to install the brake controller and wiring kit.
