Can a 2001 Dodge Durango Tow a 2004 Aero Lite Hybrid Trailer 3,800 lb Dry Weight

Im looking at a 2004 aero lit hybrid trailer close to 3800 dry weight. Im wonder if this is to much trailer for my 2001 dodger Durango slt 4wd 3.55 ratio. At this time it does not have a tow package

My information shows that the maximum towing capacity of the 2001 Dodge Durango SLT 4wd with 4.7 liter V8 engine and 3.55 rear end gear ratio is 4,100 lbs. This means that if you were to tow a travel trailer with a dry weight of 3800 lbs you would only be able to add 300 lbs of gear to the trailer, including water, propane, trailer battery, and all of the other equipment you will need. You should check your specific vehicle max towing capacities in your owners manual or consult the vehicle dealer.
If you determine that you can tow the 2004 Aero Lite Hybrid trailer that you are considering, a weight distribution system is recommended because the weight of the trailer will be greater than 1/2 the weight of your Durango. I would recommend the Reese Weight Distribution System with Shank, # RP66542, which will handle trailer tongue weights from 600 to 1,200 lbs. Remember that when figuring your tongue weight you will need to add the weight loaded in the vehicle behind the rear axle and you should check the hitch on your vehicle to be sure it is compatible with weight distribution.
You will also need a hitch ball with a 1/1/4 inch shank to match the trailer coupler. Most likely the Tow Ready 2-5/16 inch Hitch Ball, # 19286, will be correct, but you could need the Curt 2 inch Hitch Ball, # A-90, if the trailer has a 2 inch coupler.
Since you Durango does not have the factory tow package you may need several other items to complete your towing setup. If you do not have a 2 inch receiver hitch you will need to add one. Our best selling hitch for the 2001 Durango is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, # 75081. I added a link to installation instructions and a video for you to review.
You may also need 7-Way wiring and a brake controller to activate the electric trailer brakes on the trailer. Since your vehicle does not have the factory tow package you will need to start with a 4-Way trailer connector, # 118334, then install the electronic brake controller installation kit, # ETBC7, along with a brake controller. I provided links to installation instructions and videos for these items for you to review prior to installation.
