What Causes and Prevents Persistent Trailer Sway
Question:
I have a 2002 F350 7.3 powerstroke pulling a 1992 Fleetwood Wilderness 22foot travel trailer- 900 lb tongue weight- 6000 lb loaded....if I try and go above about 63 miles per hour I get some trailer Wag....I tried to correct this using a friction anti sway bar installed on the passenger side of my a frame tongue but this setup limited tight turning and backing up since the sway bar ball would hit my A frame trailer tongue on the right side if I got myself into a sticky situation and had to slightly jack knife myself to get myself out of somewhere- even if I removed the sway bar the ball mount would still touch in the right hand position....I camp in off grid places and national forests- do you feel that this system would allow for tight turns for my rig without binding?? Thanks

WD systems and sway controls are great at minimizing sway from passing semi trucks and high winds but they are not designed to prevent persistent sway at highway speed as that's a loading problem. You need to get as much weight forward in the trailer as you can as it sounds like your tongue weight is too low. You need the trailer tongue weight to measure 10 to 15 percent of the total trailer weight.
You also want to make sure your trailer is sitting as level as possible and that your trailer suspension is not worn out. Also you can check to make sure your tires are inflated to the max psi for them that is on the sidewall of the trailer.
