How to Transport 65 Pound Scooter on 2008 Hyundai Elantra

Question:

I have a 2008 hyundai elentra which I believe can only use a class 1 hitch. I have about a 65 lb electric scooter that I need a attachment for but cant find a hitch that would work for a class 1. I would need a ramp for my scooter as I cant lift the scooter onto a carrier. Do you have any recommendations? A adaptor for the class 1 to turn it to a class 2? Or a carrier for a class 1 with a ramp?

You are correct that there are only Class I trailer hitches available for your 2008 Hyundai Elantra. There are adapters available that can convert the 1-1/4 inch receiver opening on a Class I hitch to a 2 inch opening but it will reduce its capacity by 50 percent so this won't be a good option with a heavier scooter.

The best option we have to transport your scooter will be with a lightweight cargo carrier that is compatible with Class I hitches and is large enough for your scooter.

Starting with the hitch itself I recommend the Draw-Tite # 24795 because it offers a slightly easier install process than the Curt alternative on your Elantra. I have attached an install video that you can use for reference.

Then for a carrier I recommend taking a look at the 19 X 47 Curt Carrier # C18110, which represents the longest Class I carrier we have at 47 inches. It has a 19 inch width and weighs just about 30 pounds which would give you a total weight of 95 pounds with the scooter loaded.

None of the Class I carriers feature an integrated ramp but you could potentially add one with the Stallion # 288-07474. This is an 800 pound capacity ramp that measures 4 feet long and 11 inches wide. The ramp weighs 16 pounds. Would you be able to store it in your back seat? With it being only 11 inches, I don't know how you could make that work for your carrier. Two of them would not quite fit.

I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on these products that you can check out as well.
