Wiring Your Towed Car with Hopkins

Wiring your car for flat towing has never been easier. No more testing wires or splicing into your electrical system. No need to painstakingly position multiple diodes beneath your vehicle. No worries about voiding your warranty. With this custom-fit towed vehicle wiring kit from Hopkins, all you have to do is plug the harness into your vehicle's existing wiring, which is located behind your car's tail light assemblies. No cutting, tapping, or splicing is required.

After plugging in the wiring harness, use the included bracket to mount the 4-way flat connector at the front of your towed car. An extension loop (sold separately) is required to connect your towed car to your RV.

Do You Need a Brake Light Relay?

Because your vehicle has a combined lighting system - wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire - a brake light relay (RM-88400 - sold separately) may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup. A supplemental braking system depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So, if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off - as is the case when towing - then you need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard.

Video Transcript for Review of Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring - Custom Tail Light Wiring Kit Towed Vehicle - HM27VR

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Hopkins Custom Taillight Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles. Now this is, as I mentioned, custom fit specifically for your 2021 and newer Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe. And on custom fit parts such as this wiring, I do recommend taking advantage of our vehicle fit guide here at etrailer.com. Simply input the year, make, and model of your vehicle and our fit guide will confirm if this will work for you, or if we have something comparable that will work for you.

Now this wiring kit is going to let you wire your Suburban or Tahoe to accept your RV's tail, brake, and turn signal lights for flat-towing. As you can see, this is going to give you a four-way flat plug at the front of your towed vehicle to connect to your motor home. And this is going to plug in quickly and easily. What's nice about this wiring is there's not going to be any cutting or splicing of the wiring in your vehicle, and the connection points are located behind your vehicle's taillights. This kit prevents electrical feedback to safeguard your towed vehicle's electrical system.

This weatherproof box keeps the built-in diodes protected, so this won't interfere with the electrical system when your towed vehicle is not hooked up to your RV. This does include everything that you see here on my table before me. You're gonna, of course, get this wiring harness. You're going to get this mounting bracket, and this is going to fit this plug with this tethered cap here. So the mounting bracket fits just like that in place, and then you can use that cap as well.

And then you're going to mount this mounting bracket to the front of your towed vehicle with the included hardware. So that's going to be convenient to keep that mounted at the front of your towed vehicle. And then this is also going to include some cable ties, terminal grease for your electrical connections, and also a self-tapping screw so you can safely and securely mount your your grounding wire. Now the extension loop for connecting your towed vehicle to your RV is sold separately. And because your vehicle has a combined lighting system, wherein the brake signals and the turn signals are carried on a single wire, a brake light relay may be required if you use a supplemental braking system with your towing setup.

So, a supplemental braking system, as you probably know, depresses the brake pedal in your towed car every time you apply the brakes in your RV. So if your towed car's brake lights illuminate when the the brake pedal is pressed and the engine is off, as is the case when towing, then you do need to install a relay to ensure that the lights on your towed car always act in accordance with the signals sent by your RV via the wiring harness. Without a relay, the brake signal from your towed car will override the turn signal sent by your RV when you slow down to make turns, creating a potential hazard. So on your screen, I am including the relay that you would need. If you are in need of that, you can take that item number that you see there, put it in the search field of our website that will take you to that relay kit, and you can add that to your order if you are in need. Well, that's gonna wrap up our brief look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
