Installation of Derale Transmission Cooler # D12906 on a 2003 Acura MDX

Question:

When installing the cooler. Where do you connect the hoses to upper or lower connections or do you not use the radiator at all. Do you still use the radiator cooler if so in line? Radiator first then cooler then back to transmission. can the unit be mounter sideways?

A transmission cooler will attach in-line with the transmission fluid return line on your 2003 Acura MDX. The best way to determine which line on a transmission cooler is the return line from the radiator is to use the following procedure:

1. Start engine while engine is cold
2. Place transmission shift lever in drive for no more than 10 seconds.
3. Stop engine and remove keys
4. Identify the transmission fluid return line by feeling both lines. The coolest line is the return line.

You will want to route the transmission fluid through the factory cooler in your radiator, first, and then through the Derale Transmission Cooler, part # D12906, and finally back to your transmission. So the Derale cooler will be added after the factory transmission cooler in the radiator. I am including links to FAQ pages on transmission coolers and one of the FAQs will show a diagram of how the cooler will connect to your vehicle.

The line pressure from the transmission will push the fluid through the cooler if its mounted horizontally, vertically or any direction in between. I would recommend you choose a location based on receiving maximizing airflow through the cooler, regardless of what direction it points.

I am including a link to a video that will show a transmission cooler being installed on a 2006 Honda CR-V. The vehicle is different, but the installation procedure will be similar.
