Can the Shore Power Cord From the Trailer Be Plugged Into a Generator To Power a Window AC Unit
Question:
I bought the A-iPower 2KW Portable Inverter Generator for backup/alternative power for my 2015 KZBH16 Sportsman Travel Trailer. I understand the 2000 starting/1600 running watts provides about 13 amps of power. I plan on plugging the trailer power chord into the generator using the Mighty Chord Adapter Plug Item # A10-G3030AVP. The trailer has a 5,000 BTU window type air conditioner that draw approx 550 watts/5 amps. Assuming no other appliances are running Microwave, Refrigerator, toaster, etc and only a few 12-volt lights are on, can I safely run the A/C using the trailers electrical system i.e. plug the trailer into the generator, plug the A/C into the trailer? Or, should I plug the A/C directly into the generator and bypass the trailers electrical system? My concern is the trailer is expecting a 30-amp supply via the power chord and I dont want to damage the electrical system or the A/C due to lower power.

Helpful Expert Reply:
If the AC power consumption of your trailer does not exceed the 1,600 watt rating of the A-iPower 2,000-Watt Portable Inverter Generator part # 289-SUA2000I then yes, you can plug the shore power cord on your trailer directly into your generator using the Mighty Cord Generator Adapter Plug part # A10-G3030AVP. You don't need to worry about not having the full 30 amps at the power source as the trailer is only going to draw as much as it needs. Since, you will only be using around a third of the generator's power output with your window air conditioner you could still power other items in the trailer as well.
There is a standard 120 volt outlet on the above generator so you could plug the window air conditioner directly into this as well if you like but I don't see any issues plugging your trailer into the generator either.
