2021 Ford Ranger SumoSpring Recommendation for Towing a Trailer with Weight Distribution

Question:

For 2021 Ford Ranger 4x4, 5000lbs trailer, hitch weight ~550lbs, using WDH. I have installed Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Item # TFRRGR. When loaded ride is VERY rough though no squat. Looking for more forgiveness when loaded. Should I got with SumoSprings Item # SS76MR or Item # SS86MR. Thanks,

Since the only difference between the SumoSprings Solo Custom Helper Springs # SS76MR and # SS86MR is the weight rating (the former being 1,000 lbs and the latter being 1,500 lbs) I recommend going with the lighter option - part # SS76MR.

It would be good to double check the weight rating for your weight distribution system (WDS) prior to swapping out your suspension enhancement. The Timbrens have been known to make the ride a bit more stiff but if your WDS is rated too high then that's a contributing factor as well.

When looking into a WDS you want one with a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer, which you can use part # e99044 for, along with the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Keep in mind that a properly loaded trailer will have a TW that is 10-15% of the loaded weight of your trailer.

If your WDS is rated too high then something like the Blue Ox TrackPro # BLU36FR which has a TW range of 200 lbs - 600 lbs might be more in your wheelhouse.
