Options for Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brakes with 2006 Ford Truck with Integrated Controller

Question:

I have a new trailer with electric over hydraulic disc brakes,my tow truck is a 2006 Ford super duty with the factory installed brake controller.when I plug in the trailer it keeps flashing trailer disconnected,is there something I can do to get this to work with my oem controller? I might be wrong, but I think the trailer actuator is an Actibrake? Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thank

If you had a Titan BrakeRite Actuator # T4813102 all you would need is a Titan BrakeRite EHB Adapter # T4845900 and you would be good to use your OEM controller. But since you have an Actibrake you have two options.

You can either replace the Actibrake with a Titan BrakeRite EHB Electric-Hydraulic Actuator # T4813102 and then install a # T4845900 and then you could use your OEM brake controller from your 2006 Ford Super Duty.

Your second option would be to install a brake controller that is capable of working with electric-over-hydraulic trailer brakes. For that I would recommend you get a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller # 90885. This controller is one of our best sellers because of how easy to set up it is and how well it works.

I spoke with my contact at Tekonsha and he stated that there are two ways that you can install an aftermarket brake controller in a 2006 Ford F-350 with an integrated brake controller.

The first way is to hardwire in the controller. The white wire goes to the negative battery terminal, the black wire to the positive battery terminal via a 20 or 30 amp circuit breaker, # 9506P. The red wire connects to the circuit on the brake switch that shows a signal on a circuit tester like, # PTW2993, ONLY when the brake pedal is pressed.

The blue wire would have to be routed from the controller, under the vehicle, and to the 7-Way using wire # 10-1-1. You would then cut the connection from the factory controller and attach the wire you just ran. This bypasses the factory controller and will not cause fault codes.

The other way, and what Tekonsha recommends, is to use a wiring harness, # 3065-P and brake controller, # 90885, plug it into the factory plug after disconnecting it from the factory controller. Then take the truck to a dealership to clear the fault code that will appear. I have included a link to a Tech Bulletin that explains what they do at the dealer to clear the fault code.
