Recommended Crossbars for Standard 5x8 Utility Trailer to Carry 4 Kayaks

Question:

We have a 5x8 utility trailer the kind that you’d purchase at Lowe’s or Home Depot. We are looking for a way that to haul up to 4 kayaks on that trailer. Any suggestions?

I recommend the Malone TopTier part # MPG493. The Malone TopTier is designed to add load bars to an open trailer. The steel uprights attach to the side rails of the utility trailer since there is not a roof to attach the hardware to. The uprights install on trailers that are 4 feet or 5 feet wide so they work with your new trailer. The setup is about 4 feet tall so you can add cargo to the trailer as well if you need to.

The bars are 78 inches long, so the 4 kayaks fit the bars on their sides. I recommend using a J-Pro2 Kayak Carrier with Tie-downs part # MPG117MD. You do need 4 of these J-style carriers to carry 4 kayaks on their side. This Kayak carrier comes with the tie down straps you need to tie the kayaks down.
