Is 5 inches Between Bed Rails and Trailer Overhang Enough Clearance for Towing Gooseneck
Question:
I have a 2018 Chevy 3500 dually, with a OEM Curt Q25 hitch. We just traded up to a new 5th wheel. Our other 5th wheel had a morryde pin box and the distance from the trailer to the top of the truck bed was significant I never measured it. However, the new trailer came with a rota-flex pin box and when the trailer is connected there is only 5inch of clearance between the top of the truck bed and trailer. When hitched the unit is level. the hitch is adjusted to its highest setting. With that in mind I have 2 questions: 1, is 5inch of clearance appropriate? 2 if not, does Curt sell any type of adapter?

Expert Reply:
The generally accepted clearance between the overhang of a gooseneck hitch and the bed rails of a truck is 4-6 inches. Most will say that 6 inches at least is ideal as the minimum but 5 inches would be enough for most situations. If the trailer is sitting level you wouldn't want to raise the nose of it further as that would take it out of being level.
