Troubleshooting Older Firestone Air Compressor Having Trouble Pressurizing Air Lines

Question:

I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado with Firestone Airbags. The compressor seems to intermittently work. When it does, I have to let all the air out of the air bags before it will pressurize the lines. Once pressurized is works fine, but now I cant even get the lines to pressurize. I can hear the compressor working, but no air pressure. Ive checked the lines and there is no air leak in the lines or bags. Seems like it is either a compressor issue or the compressor air tank issue. The model number is 24-3582-9147. Any thoughts as to what to do.

The best way to determine what is going on is to disconnect the air line directly at the air compressor and then see if it is blowing out air when you turn it on. If it isn't blowing air or if it is struggling to maintain air pressure then that means the compressor is shot or there is a air escaping elsewhere on the compressor. Either way the best solution is to get a new air compressor. If it is blowing air and isn't struggling to maintain pressure then you have something going on with your air lines or bags.

I wasn't able to find anything on the part number that you gave me and neither could my contact at Firestone. I can say that if you are just looking for a standard duty compressor kit then I recommend the Air Command I # F2158 which is a standard-duty compressor with an analog gauge and single function capability. If this doesn't match up as a replacement for your compressor just let me know some more details about your system and I can recommend something that is more of a direct match.
