Parts Needed to Tow with a 2012 Kia Sorento AWD V6

Question:

Im really new to towing my 2012 kia sorento awd v6. I have read what it can tow, and the gvwr, but what weight class should I be looking for that I can tow. Should the rv be half the weight of my sorento. I read the previous questions another sorento owner asked, so I just need clarification.

According to page 5-59 of the online version of the owner's manual for your 2012 Kia Sorento, the max weight you can tow with the 3.5L engine is 1,588 lbs when using a brake system. Even though Class I trailer hitches exceed this weight rating I highly recommend going with a Class III trailer hitch that has the 2" receiver because it gives you a lot more versatility in how you can utilize the trailer hitch.

For your application I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame # 75684 because it is a Class III hitch with the 2" receiver and, unlike the Curt equivalent, you don't need to use a support strap like part # 18050, when carrying accessories. Since the max weight of your trailer will be less than half of the weight of your Sorento a weight distribution (WD) system isn't necessarily required, but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Ultimately it is up to you and how you feel your towing setup feels during travel.

If you don't already have wiring or a brake controller, then I recommend installing a Curt T-Connector. If you have the factory tow package, then you need part # C56332 (which plugs into existing connectors) but if you don't have the factory tow package you need part # C59496 instead (which splices into your OEM wiring and draws power directly from the battery). I have attached sample installation videos for each that you can reference.

For a brake controller I recommend the Curt Echo # C51180 which plugs directly into a 7-Way and is adjusted with your Apple or Android device (Apple: 8.0 or newer and Android: 4.4 and newer OS requirements). To give your Sorento a 7-Way you can use the Upgrade Kit # ETBC7.

The last thing you need to complete your towing setup is a ball mount kit or WD system. I have attached links to our selection of both options but if you would like some help determining which specific part to use just let me know. I have attached links to help aid you as well.

Some installation videos have also been linked for you to reference.
