Troubleshooting Trailer Disconnected Code for Integrated Brake Controller on a 2017 Ford F-350

Question:

2017 Ford F-350 says my trailer is disconnected. I do have a little bit of brakes. Just enough to lock up the front tires when the trailer is empty. However, when I squeeze the integrated brake controller in the cab the output doesn’t light up. I did run the battery low.

What you need to do is test the 7-Way connector both on your 2017 Ford F-350 and your trailer. Since your F-350 is new I doubt that it is on the vehicle side but you can use a circuit tester like part # PTW2991 and the attached picture of a vehicle 7-Way to make sure that all of the functions are operating properly.

To test the 7-Way on your trailer simply take a 12V battery and ground the negative terminal while using the positive terminal to apply power to each pin on the 7-Way. If one of the functions on your trailer doesn't work properly (most likely the lights) then that is the specific circuit that you need to examine.

Once you narrow down which circuit (or circuits) are causing the issue trace the wiring from the 7-Way back to the thing(s) that it powers looking for any places where the wiring is bent or damaged and replacing as needed.

If this doesn't fix your problem then you need to call or take your setup in to your nearest Ford dealer to see what else might be throwing that code.
