Can Electric Brakes be Added to Boat Trailer

Question:

My boat a 18ft Bayliner doesn’t have any type of brakes. Is it possible to use electric brakes. Have seen comments from those that have done this and have been happy with their results. My truck handles this boat fine, being small but always thought it would be safer to add the brakes, what do you think?

You can definitely add electric brakes to your boat trailer.

For a long time only hydraulic assemblies were used on boat trailers (since water and electricity aren't the best of friends), but more and more customers (as you mentioned seeing) are going to electric brakes. Various component upgrades over the years such as the casing that is used on wiring and heat shrink butt connectors like # DW05745-10 to provide a tight seal on your connections have made it so electric brakes on a boat trailer just isn't an issue. A lot more boat trailer manufacturers are even putting them on at the factory because of how cost effective they are.

The only thing you need to remember with this type of setup is to disconnect the trailer plug before backing the trailer up for launch and then waiting a bit for them to dry off before plugging them back in when it's time to leave.

I do also agree that adding brakes to your trailer is a great idea. Even it seems like you technically don't need them, adding them will take a lot of stress off your truck (as of now your truck is 100 percent responsible for stopping the trailer) that will likely lead it to having a much longer lifespan.

I have attached a great article on adding electric brakes that you can take a look at. The article breaks down every component that will be needed. If you have any questions along the way please feel free to let me know.
