How to Use Roof Top Tent on Truck Bed with Tonneau Cover Installed

Question:

Hello, Im wondering what the best option is for a RTT on the bed of a Tacoma with a tonneau. Will the Rhino Rack universal naked roof tracks mounted to the tops of the bed sides with heavy duty bars will support a 100-lb tent and its 600-lb capacity? If not, are there any other options available?

If the tonneau cover on your Toyota Tacoma installs completely inside the bed rails then you can install crossbar tracks like the Rhino Rack # RRRTV168 that you mentioned for a 5-1/2 foot bed or part # RRRTV208 for a 6-1/2 foot bed. Just note that you will need to cut into a factory plastic bed liner if present where the rivets for the tracks need to attach. Then with the tracks installed you can add the Rhino Rack RLTF Legs # RLTF and the Heavy-Duty Crossbars # RB1800B.

Whether or not the crossbars will provide enough weight capacity for your tent and occupants depend on the style of tent you plan on using. These Heavy-Duty Crossbars have a weight capacity of 220 pounds so the weight of anything on top of them cannot exceed this. You will need to use a tent like the Yakima SkyRise # Y07437 that uses a ladder to support a portion of the weight. This particular tent has a weight capacity of 600 pounds but only requires crossbars that have at least a 165 pound weight capacity.

I have attached a short video demonstration on this tent that you can also check out.
