Recommended Weight Distribution System for Wolf Pup 16BHS Trailer with 2013 Toyota 4Runner

Question:

I am buying a 2015 Forest River Wolf Pup 16BHS. Dry weight is 2,900 lbs. Tongue weight is 417 lbs. I am pulling it with a 2013 Toyota 4Runner. Towiing capacity is 5,000 lbs. I am getting conflicting information about needing a weight distribution hitch with sway control. Do I need one? If so, what models would you recommend? Thank you. Its all confusing........

I checked the online owners manual for your 2013 Toyota 4Runner and the tongue weight can be between 9 and 11 percent of the trailer weight without using a weight distribution system. So based on the tongue weight you gave of 417 lbs, the tongue weight of your trailer is just over 14% so it is recommended to use a weight distribution system.

When choosing which system is best for your vehicle and trailer combination, you want to determine the total tongue weight. This is the loaded and ready to go tongue weight of your trailer along with any cargo weight behind the rear axle of your 4Runner. I've attached an article and some videos to assist further.

My recommendation is to use a weight distribution system that also has integrated sway control. For what I consider to be the best sway control, I recommend the Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66083. This system utilizes dual cams and hot rolled spring bars to actively prevent sway and keep your trailer in line. This will allow you to overcome the cams on turns and then it will automatically realign to keep your trailer inline with your vehicle. You will need a hitch ball like # A-90 for a 2 inch hitch ball for this system. If you need a 2-5/16 inch ball I recommend # 19286.

For a more economical option, I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution # FA92-00-0800. This system has 2-point integrated sway control using metal on metal friction. It also comes with a 10 year warranty. You will also need a thin walled socket like # ALL643216 to install the hitch ball. The hitch balls listed above will also work for this system.
