Installation of the Yakima Swing Daddy Replacement Speed Knob and Wedge

Question:

I just received a speed knob replacement. Does the wedge get balanced on the exterior of the male piece to the receiver THEN have the rod screwed from inside or does the wedge get screwed in entirely from the interior? I can’t seem to get the play out of the rack. All videos seem to show photos/ videos of replacement parts on the ridgeback. I have a swing daddy 4 bike carrier and am incredibly frustrated with its installation.

The Speed Knob replacement # 8880508 for your Yakima SwingDaddy will require removing the wedge and then inserting the threaded screw in the interior. It will be the same basic installation as the RidgeBack model you mentioned.

To get the play out of the rack, you will slightly lift and lower the shank of your bike rack as you tighten the speed knob. Any of the small movement that is taken out at install will give you a more stable connection for less play in the receiver.

This answer doesn't get at the main question. The wedge goes on the outside prior to threading the screw??

Right - you'll insert the speed knob and then line up the wedge with the threaded portion, turning the knob until it catches and secures into place. I linked a full install video below that you can use for reference.

@ChrisR The rack in the video for replacing the speedlock and wedge looks nothing like the Fullswing model I purchased in 2020. Out of date or from outside the USA?

@JeffN That swinging bike rack at the start of the video is the SwingDaddy and it was discontinued back in 2019. So Yakima actually had 2 different swinging bike racks available for a bit.
