Tightening Chain Links on Reese Strait Line WD System to Reduce Sway
Question:
first trip towing 30foot Airstream with 2017 Tundra...dealer installed hitch and recommended the 5th link in chain from strut...experienced some sway on interstate. Friend suggested tightening one link to that the chain is on 4th link seems to reduce sway from passing semis....is this appropriate setting? videos show 5th link in chain to be preferable....any relationship between tightness and swaying? hope you can help

When using a chain hanger weight distribution system like the Reese Strait-Line # RP66072 that you referenced, you ideally want to have 5 links between the hook and U-bolt. I recommend first trying to adjust the ball mount angle a bit rearward to see if this helps your sway issues. Also make sure the cam arm is adjusted properly for your setup. I have attached the installation instructions so you can read through this procedure. In some cases 4 links might be necessary for the spring bars to be level with the trailer frame, but it is best to try and avoid this for proper operation.
If you are still having sway issues with everything set up properly, I next recommend making sure that the system is properly rated for your total tongue weight. Your total tongue weight includes both the loaded tongue weight of the trailer along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Tundra. This number should fall within the tongue weight capacity range on your system. The Reese Strait Line that you mentioned has a capacity of 200 to 600 pounds. Sway can also be the result of simply not having enough tongue weight on the trailer. A trailer's tongue weight should be around 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. If it is less than this then sway issues can arise. Simply moving some cargo up to the front of the trailer will take care of that.
If you are still having issues please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
