2017 ford explorer 4wd keyless start It says after you hook up tow bar etc shift to N then shut off engine and disconnect the negative side of battery...Will the portable braking system and lights still work with this configuration?

The portable braking systems like the Blue Ox Patriot II # BRK2016 will work with the 2017 Ford Explorer 4WD keyless start but you will need to utilize the 12 Volt Outlet Kit, 20 amps # RM-9332 to get power from the battery and ground through the vehicle frame or metal supports. You will also use # RM-71000 if you don't have adjustable pedals or # RM-751478 if you have adjustable pedal. This kit activates your RV monitoring system to alert you when the brakes of your towed car are being applied. This switch also wires directly to your tow vehicle so you get constant current. The easy connection alternative is to use the battery disconnect switch which will allow your braking system and lights to function without disconnecting the terminal each time.
I'd also recommend the following to complete your flat towing setup:
Roadmaster EZ4 Base Plate Kit # RM-524445-4 or EZ5 # RM-524445-5
Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar- 6,000 lbs # RM-520
Safety cables # RM-643
Roadmaster Automatic Battery Disconnect with Switch for Towed Vehicle w/ Supplemental Braking System # RM-766
Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267
Finally you will want a high-low adapter. I've attached an article to assist with measurements for correct fit and have linked a page to your options.
