Troubleshooting Trailer Tire Blowouts on a 2007 Fleetwood Bayside Popup

Question:

Hi I have the above camper. The tires that are being sold to me are TrailerKing ST 175/80R13 c. Are these tires sufficient for my 2007 Fleetwood Bayside popup? I have had 3 blowouts within a one year period. What tires are recommended? Do I need the D version?

From what I could find it looks like your 2007 Fleetwood Bayside 4178 has a weight of 2,630 lbs and the tire you mentioned has a weight capacity of 1,360 lbs. If the 2,630 lbs is the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of your popup then the combined 2,720 lb weight capacity of your tires should be more than enough to carry your trailer. If your GVWR (and loaded trailer weight) is higher than 2,720 lbs then you will need a tire that has a much higher weight capacity.

Even though the tires are rated well for your application there are a few things to take into consideration. The first thing is the quality of the tire. If these are cheaper tires then they could be wearing out simply due to the poor construction of the tire itself. If this is the case then I recommend going with the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 which has a load range D (1,610 lbs at 65 psi) and a speed rating of 81 mph.

Aside from tire construction you also need to keep in mind the speed rating of your tires and keeping your popup loaded properly. If you are driving too fast then that would lead to excessive heat build-up and a blowout. If you are loading your popup heavy on one side then you could possibly be putting more weight on that one tire. Running over potholes and hitting curbs will hurt the integrity of your tires and cause blowouts as well.

I have attached a helpful article on trailer tires that you can check out as well.
