Recommended Parts to Tow a Trailer with a 2015 Dodge Journey

Question:

Help deciding which trailer hitch assembly to purchase. After watching your YouTube vids...I am interested in doing it myself! I have a Dodge Journey 2015 base model and looking to haul small trailers cabin/camping. Any suggestions?

Certainly. I recommend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver, part # 76225. I like that once it's installed you only see the open receiver tube and not the crossbeam. It is a more difficult install and requires you to cut some fascia on your 2015 Dodge Journey. I've linked the video from when we installed it along with the install details for you. If you prefer an eaier install then look at the Curt # C13201. To install the Curt you need to temporarily remove the spare tire and lower the exhuast but there's no trimming so it's easier and doesn't take as long as the Draw-Tite.

To tow your trailers you also need a ball mount, hitch ball, and wiring. The correct ball mount you need depends on the rise or drop necessary to keep your trailer level. To figure this out measure from the ground to the bottom of your trailers's couplers. Compare this to the measurement we make from the ground to the inner top of the receiver opening. On the Draw-Tite I recommended it's 16-1/2 inches and the Curt is 14 inches. If your trailer is higher than you need a ball mount with that much rise. If the trailer is lower than you want that much drop. I've linked a help article that goes into the process in more detail. I've also linked all of our ball mounts that fit the 2 inch receivers. Once you choose a ball mount select a hitch ball that has the same diameter shank as the ball mount's hole, as well as the size ball that matches your trailers's coupler. If you need a vareity of heights and ball sizes it may be easier to go with an adjustable ball mount.

The wiring harness you need depends on whether the Journey has LED or incandescent lights. If yours has LEDs I recommend part # 118536. If instead it has incandescent bulbs then part # 118567. They both have a powered coverter which is good to keep the strain of the trailer lights off of the vehicle's electrical system. They also both install the same by plugging into the connectors for your Dodge's tail lights. Then run a hot wire from the harness to the vehicle battery. Everything you need is included.

In addition to the videos of each product I've also linked some articles on towing and installing a hitch you might find helpful.
