Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited

Question:

I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon UnlimitedLJ. I was wanting to tow a single axel travel trailer that has a dry weight of around 3000lbs. My Jeep is rated to tow 3500lbs. I was wanting recommendations on a hitch and wire package that would work. i would like the wire package to include both a 4 way flat plug for smaller trailers and a plug that would work with a travel trailer. Thanks

We have everything you need to set your 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited up for towing.

Starting with the trailer hitch, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Receiver Hitch # 75193. This Class III hitch is confirmed to fit your Jeep and will use existing holes in its frame for a no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and has a 4,000 pound towing capacity (although you will still need to stay below the 3,500 pound limit for the Jeep).

I have attached the written installation instructions on this hitch that you can look through.

Then for a trailer wiring harness, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118409. This custom harness will install by connecting directly to existing ports behind the vehicle, below the driver and passenger side tail lights. This will give you a 4-Way connector to connect with and power a trailer's basic signal lights. I have attached an installation video that you can use for reference.

From here, to install a fully-functional 7-Way connector to use with trailers that are equipped with electric brakes, you will need to install the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This kit includes everything needed to install not only the 7-Way connector, but also a trailer brake controller. The connector that is included has both a 4-Way and 7-Way. I have attached a great article that details the installation steps for this kit that you might find helpful.

Then, to power a trailer's electric brakes, you will also need a brake controller. For this, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Jeep. It features a nice LCD display, storable settings, and continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues.

Finally, in order to tow a trailer, you will need a ball mount and hitch ball. I have attached an article that explains how to choose the best one for your setup, along with a link that will take you to our available selection. I have also included a couple articles on towing a trailer that you can look through.
