Weight Distribution for 2018 F-150 Towing Travel Trailer with 1000-lbs Loaded Tongue Weight

Question:

Hi, Could you help me to find the best weight distribution hitch for my setup. I have a 2018 F150 with crew cab and 6.5’ box. The travel trailer is a 24’ box with 28’ pole to bumper length. Dry weight is 5300, loaded 7000lbs max. Dry tongue is 660lbs as per manufacturer. I try to choose between E2 or equalizer. I can be wrong, but 1000/10k seem to be the right capacity choice. There a big advantage for the equalizer against the E2? Thanks

The key to picking out the right weight distribution system for your travel trailer is to load the trailer a few times and measure the actual fully-loaded and road-ready tongue weight with scale # e99044. Of course the loaded TW will be higher than the specified dry hitch weight but it is important to know the actual tongue weight of the trailer as you will actually be loading/using it.

You also need to add the weight of any cargo in the bed of the F-150 that sits behind the rear axle, say a cooler or generator, as this behind-the-axle cargo weight acts just like trailer tongue weight. Once you know this total tongue weight you can select a system such that your total falls in the middle of the system's operating range.

If your total loaded TW ends up being 1000-lbs, quite possible based on the dry weight of 660-lbs, then you want a setup rated for between 800- and 1200-lbs, the Equal-I-zer # EQ37120ET which includes a 2-5/16-inch hitch ball. All you might add is a socket # ALL643216 for hitch ball installation.

This offers 4-points of friction for sway prevention and will do a much better job of controlling the trailer than the E2.
