Trailer Wiring and 4-Way Mounting Brackets for a 2011 Subaru Forester

Question:

For my 2011 Subaru Forester I would like to run my trailer light cable outside under the wheel well instead of through the tailgate. I would also like to have the connector mounted to the hitch with a suitable bracket. It looks like all mounting brackets both drill and no-drill versions save for one #18159: 6 and 7-Way Trailer Connector Mounting Box for Round or Square Tube Hitches are for square tube hitches. If 18159 can be used with the Curt 13147, is there a flat 4 bracket that will work with the 18159? Otherwise, I was thinking of using 37185 Adapter 4 Pole to 7 Pole and 4 Pole and simply not use the 7 pole side. Seems like a bit of a waste and kluge since as far as I can tell, my ru doesnt have or probably need a brake controller. Also, what size wire worm would I need with 4 pole flat cable running from the converter. I think its 1/2, but was hoping that 3/8 might work.

You can certainly route trailer wiring however you would like provided that you can find a grommet or other exit source in the bottom of the cargo area through which to route the 4-Way. You will also need to seal it up with silicone once you have the wire routed to keep out exhaust fumes and moisture.

I recommend the T-One Wiring Harness, # 118467. I have included a link to the installation details for you. If you look at the product page, you will see a diagram and picture under the description. Make sure to follow these when performing the installation.

For a mounting bracket, recommend the 4-Pole Mounting Bracket, # 18144 used with No-Drill Bracket, # 18140, or # C57202, both or which will fit round or square tubes.

You may not need a wire worm or similar product. I always routed wires with coat hangers personally, but I am not sure that 1/2 inch is necessary. Without seeing the vehicle, it is hard to say. If you can find a grommet or other exit point at the bottom of the cargo area, you would not need any special tools to pull the wiring through.
