What Would Tongue Weight Capacity be Using Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit w/3,100 Pound Trailer
Question:
I just ordered swing away coupler kit FHDPB350101. I have a 3x5 shorelander trailer SLXR23SW with a 55inch tongue that is not long enough to open the tailgate of my SUV. I want to use the kit to extend the tongue about 18-24, but I am worried that it will reduce tongue weight. My trailer weighs about 3100lbs and my tongue weight currently is about 180lbs. How much will the extension reduce my tongue weight?

If we go by the max pivot length chart, see picture, at 3,100 pounds the tongue weight maximum would be 310 pounds (since in the chart the max tongue load is 10 percent of the gross trailer weight). If your tongue weight is 180 pounds now then it will still be plenty low enough with a longer, folding tongue.
